Afterglow: The Birth of Phosphorus

Play episode

Who better to talk about the birth of Phosphorus than Phosphorus himself. Right?

We gave this show over to Phosphorus to tell this crazy tale. The story begins on a cold night in Hamburg; a German physician Hennig Brandt is attempting to create gold by boiling down thousands of gallons of urine.

This audio drama was inspired by the book The Sordid Tale of Murder, Fire, and Phosphorus, The 13th Element. by John Easley. Phosphorus occurs naturally in phosphate, but when we strip away the oxygen atoms and expose the element itself, trouble has happened. This book shares how this element has had a major impact on human history for both good and evil.

This was our first audio drama, which was a bit different, but fun to produce. Special thanks to Thomas Cawood and JJ Wang for reviewing the script and offering much-needed guidance. Thanks to our voice actors who brought this all together, especially Phosphorus, played by Mark McCauley, and Henning Brandt, played by Christopher M.

Life can multiply until all the phosphorus has gone, and then there is an inexorable halt which nothing can prevent. -Isaac Asimov
