Twelvemile Creek drains more than twice the land area of the Reedy River, and on a typical day it carries close to twice the water. Same corner of South Carolina, forty five minutes apart. One is a creek. One is a river.
That should be the end of it, and it isn’t. The U.S. Geological Survey says there are no official definitions separating the two terms. Every flowing waterway in America, creek and river alike, gets filed under a single category. No threshold. No cutoff. The word we use is doing some other kind of work.
Follow the word back and you find a definition that broke four hundred years ago and never got repaired. It traveled west with the settlers, which is why Pennsylvania is full of runs and New Hampshire is full of brooks. In Australia, two rivers merge, and what they form is called Cooper Creek.
