We assume the map is finished. Every inch measured, numbered, taxed, accounted for. But back East, where deeds still read like directions to something buried, the map has gaps in it. Real ones.
In this episode, a surveyor with 40 years in the field tells us about the monuments he’s recovered that probably haven’t been touched since the original survey crews walked away, including one sticking up out of a creek that his wife had framed for his office. Then we follow a man who found a blank space in a county tax book, a parcel with no number and no owner, and refused to let it go. It took him two years, a compass, and survey notes older than the country itself to prove what was out there.
We won’t spoil what he pulled up out of the ground. But the state agreed with him, and the archivist said she’d never seen anything quite like it.
